Review: Christmas at The Sofitel Philippine Plaza Manila

Disclaimer: I know it’s June, and Christmas is no way near but as I mentioned, I’m catching up so please bear with me 🙂 We had a great time during our stay here and I thought it a shame not to post about it.

On December 21, 2013, my husband and I celebrated our 5th year as husband and wife and our 13th year as a couple. Since our only daughter was only around 2 yrs. and 4 months old at the time, we decided to spend our anniversary somewhere near. We were still suffering from separation anxiety and we wanted to be in driving distance. 🙂 That said, we decided to book a night at The Sofitel.

The Sofitel is located at the CCP Complex in Roxas Boulevard, Pasay City. It boasts of being the only 5-star luxury resort hotel in Manila and isDSC_0745E known for its spectacular Manila Bay sunsets. Among all the hotels in the Manila area, I believe it’s the only one which is literally by the bay as you can see from the photo of the pool area.

We arrived around noon and despite trying to check in early, we could not get a room until around 2PM. Too many people were staying at the hotel and it was chaos at the hotel lobby so we decided to take our lunch at the Sunset Bar by the poolside. It was a good lunch and quite filling too. We also had the area to ourselves. Not too many people were hanging around outside due to the heat. It gets pretty hot in Manila even in December especially at noon.

When we finally got to our room, we were delighted to see that we had a nice view of the pool. We got our superior room for about PHP9,000++ It already included buffet breakfast for two at Spiral restaurant (valued at about PHP1,600 per adult) which is quite popular for having the longest buffet in the Philippines. Our room was quite nice and it’s evident that the rooms have been renovated since our last stay. Aside from the superior room, you can also have a pick from luxury rooms, suites and imperial residence. Compared to other hotels, their rooms are more expensive but the stay is worthwhile, especially when you consider that it includes buffet breakfast for two.

For Dinner, we decided to take it outside so we could explore the nearby world trade center and do a bit of Christmas shopping at

the bazaar. Coming back to the hotel, we had some drinks by the pool and just enjoyed the breeze from the bay. Not too many people were swimming at night probably because it was a bit chilly. We then dropped by the casino located inside the hotel for a bit of fun. It was quite a small area so don’t expect it to look like Resorts World or Solaire.

Since the night was young, we hung out at Le Bar, a bistro, patisserie and library that offers a French bistro a la carte menu for a cup of hot mocha. It was a nice place to really enjoy the ambiance that the hotel had to offer and had a nice view of the hotel lobby and Spiral restaurant. After the experience, I’d have to say that it’s one of the best hotels to spend Christmas in when you are in the Philippines. The decorations are abundant and in certain areas, very homey that you could not help feeling Christmas was in the air.

In the morning, we got to enjoy breakfast at Spiral. We really enjoyed the food, especially the fresh fruits and the cheese room. You can also enjoy lunch (PHP 1,980), brunch (PHP 2,950) and dinner (PHP 2,480) buffets at the restaurant known for it’s 21 dining ateliers.

By this time, we had my parents bring our daughter over so she could enjoy swimming at the pool. In my opinion, it’s one of the best features of the hotel. It occupies a wide area and features cascading waterfalls and a bridge at the center. Small kids can also enjoy wading in the kiddie pool. Pool chairs are also conveniently provided around the pool area for those who aren’t too inclined to swim. There are also some comfy chairs located in the grassy area beside the pool for those who want to enjoy the view of the bay and sunset.

If you want to enjoy the attractions of Manila in comfort and style, this is definitely one of the best hotels to stay at. The rates are a bit expensive so you can also choose to stay at other nearby hotels but this one definitely offers some of the best views and facilities including a choice of it’s fine restaurants.

Would we stay at the hotel again? I think that’s a Yes. I’d rate it a 5/5 for it’s nice facilities, location and overall charm especially during the Christmas season.

  1. I will stay here for three nights in October 2015 and again for two nights in December 2015 so it’s very encouraging to read your positive and informative account of your stay here. I am looking forward to experiencing the Spiral buffet and lazing in the pools. Thanks so much for taking the trouble to write this review.
